Whakaari, which means “drama” or “theatre” in Maori, is an exploration of character development and interaction. Inspired by observations of interactions around me, I challenged myself to treat each instrument in this piece as a unique musical character with distinct interaction habits. Whakaari is scored for flute, clarinet, vibraphone, and piano.
