Cattywampus represents a return to my Southern roots, as well as an exploration of the concept of nostalgia. Writing this piece allowed me to return to my childhood, my own clarinet study, and my experiences with bluegrass and other folk musics. Inspired by early memories of my father playing banjo, the music takes traditional Southern sounds and puts them off-kilter, or “cattywampus.” It is scored for four Bb clarinets (at least two players per part) and two Bass Clarinets (either two Bb Bass clarinets or one Bb Bass clarinet/one Eb Contrabass clarinet).
