Thoughts on 18

I've started and restarted and revised and rewritten this post more times than I can count. I've brainstormed titles, possible nuggets of wisdom, and jokes that I think will somehow be valuable to you. But I've come up with nothing that I felt was worthwhile to complete and publish (title possibilities have included things like "Highlights of my Life" and "Why I'm Suddenly Qualified to Buy a Lottery Ticket, Sign a Contract, and go to Jail"... Yikes.)

Reactions, Self-Searching, and Character

I wanted this post to be about my first week and a half at Eastman. I wanted to write about all of my new friends, all of my fun stories, and all of my amazing classes. And maybe I’ll do that at some point, but I thought it would be more pertinent to address something that’s been on my mind as I’ve made this huge jump from high school to college: what makes me distinctly myself?

I'm addicted to Instagram?

I’m addicted to Instagram. I’m just like every other teen girl on the face of the planet: I’ll admit I scroll through the same pictures multiple times, usually not even “like”-ing any of them, and when I put my phone down, I feel terrible about myself. I beat myself up for not looking like those girls do, not being as talented as that guy is, or not having as many friends as those people do. Social media is something we talk about in terms of self-esteem a lot. We know that it can be detrimental to spend too much time looking at someone else’s life highlights, when we simultaneously are exposed to everything wrong with our lives. We try to compare the two, and it doesn’t work.

Time, Premises, and Change

We can live without our senses. We know that. Human beings can survive without sight, hearing, smell, and, although I’ve never heard of this condition, I’m sure we could live without taste (I’m not sure about touch… it would be pretty hard to walk and sit and stuff, but we’ll just ignore that for the purpose of this post). In essence, if all of those things were taken away from us, we could still think and communicate and exist. But what would happen if we lived in a world without time?

Why You Didn't Write Hamilton

At 5:12 this morning (while pulling my 3rd all-nighter in the last two weeks, oops sorry Mom) I came to an incredible realization: I have the same number of hours in a day as Lin-Manuel Miranda. At first, this was extremely discouraging. He spends his 24 hours writing and performing and loving life. I spend my 24 hours sleeping and eating and watching Disney Channel (this is a slight exaggeration… I practice I swear). So of course, my next thought would naturally be, “Why didn’t I write Hamilton?”

My One Year Interlochanniversary

Driving back from school, in between listening to Sunday in the Park with George for the 3rd time and Hamilton for the 4th, my dad sternly let me know that it was time for another blog post. So, after 3 weeks of waiting to be able to post this, here are my thoughts in honor of a very special day (sorry it’s long… I hope you like it anyway). One year ago today, I embarked on a journey that has shifted my perception, altered my path, and changed my life forever (I mean technically we left my house on June 19th, but we got to Interlochen on the 20th, so whatever).

College Auditions, Detroit, and Collaboration

Hey guys! It's been a while, and I am completely aware of this. In fact, I have been absent on purpose because I promised myself when I started this thingy that I would never post just because I felt like I had to. I only want to post if I feel like I have something somebody else should care about (or if something interesting happened to me, which you probably don't care about, but stories are fun so oh well).

15 Things I've Learned About Myself

Self-reflection is one thing that has become extremely valuable in my life as I take new risks and try new things, so I want to encourage everyone to take time to think because it can be really helpful to sort out some of your tendencies, even if they’re as stupid as your obsession with counting or your addiction to Buzzfood.

Glossary of northern terms I have learned

Yesterday in English class I learned, among other things, that I am not at all well versed in the different Northern slang terms… I commented on the snow outside and was immediately corrected: Sledge. Not Snow. So, I have since done some research about more northern terms I may or may not know, and if you ever visit, these might be helpful to you.

Somehow I've Been Away for Two Months?

I've been wanting to start a blog for a while, and tonight while procrastinating on my college applications and reading my friend’s blog, I decided that now would be as good a time as ever. There are so many people back home that I want to share my experiences with, and Instagram captions just don't cut it (although I hope you like my artsy pictures anyway).
